The best Cafés in Berlin part I

by - Mai 04, 2017

Rainy afternoons, wind and the cold like today are made to be spent in Cafés. The cozy atmosphere, a hot beverage in your hands and music playing in the background is what this Blogpost will be about.
Berlin is an amazing city with loads and loads of great Cafés. Wether you spend the day out in the sun looking for a cool drink and/or coffee, on a rainy or cold day wishing to have a coffee or hot chocolate in your hand there is always time to hop into one of these. So here is my collection of The best Café´s in Berlin that I visited within my last travels to the city.
Because these are quite many I will split this into two parts, so keep updated to not miss part II.

The best Cafés in Berlin

The Barn
located at Auguststraße 58, 10119 Berlin

The Barn may be one of the best known Cafés in Berlin but what you might not know is that there are three of them. Coming to the first one located in a side street away from the hustle of the big city.
(A little hint: the Barn is not far from the famous House of small wonder which you will get a peek into in part II)

To have the Café described and rated the best for you I decided to seperate my rating into five categories.

Location
As already said the Barn is away from the hectic daily life, a place to relax, get cozy and to enjoy whatever you wish to have. Nevertheless it is not really far away from some touristic areas and therefor easy to get to. It is rather small so if you are coming in autumn/winter it may be a struggle to find a seat but in summer they also have a sitting area outside of the Café.

Drinks/food

For me this is a really important point when considering which Café to visit and The Barn will not disappoint you. They have a lot of coffee and hot beverage options in general and a great variety of sweet and  salty snacks such as croissants, cake and sandwiches. Everything I have had so far tasted delicious.
Service
Again, The Barn is amazing overall. The baristas are really professional, nice and helpful if you have any questions or cannot decide. They speak english really well and you do not have to wait for your order a long time.

Price
The Barn is on the pricier side but completly fine for what they offer.

Instagramability
Is this even a word? Anyways, for some this may seem weird but since most of you visit through my Instagram I guess it doesn´t. This is another point wether I visit or not which is why always have a look at the location tag for the Café on Instagram. With wooden tables, earthy and rather warm tones it is in my opinion great for your need of pictures. Beautiful latte art, amazing black dishes and goodlooking food complete this perfectly. Only negativ points are the tiny space you have and the yellowish light - but if you take the picture at one of the tables at the window or are a pro at editing (For some tips have a look at How I edit my pictures) this shouldn´t be a problem.

Distrikt coffee
located at Bergstraße 68, 10115 Berlin

Location
located in walking distance to The Barn at Auguststraße if you want to do some coffee hopping ;)
Distrikt coffee might be my favourite due to the perfect interior, cozy vibes and Instagramability.
I bet you have stumbled across a picture of their pancakes when looking through your Instagramfeed sometime.
The Café is quite big yet always pretty crowded on the inside and also outside in summer. But don´t worry, wait five minutes and you will at least have the possibility to share a table with someone.

Drinks/Food
Distrikt coffee could be the best regarding this point. Get a snack, have breakfast or lunch here and enjoy your well deserved Cappuccino or whichever hot beverage you prefer.
I have not tried any of the foods here yet but will definitely come back for the amazing pancakes I always crave on Instagram.

Service
The service is professional, fast and friendly but most likely the waiters/waitresses won´t have a little chat with you which is understandable looking at how many people they have to serve. You can either order at your table or at the counter. They also speak english.

Price
On the rather pricier side but completly fine for the quality.

Instagramability
Similar to The Barn, Distrikt coffee´s interior and space relies on earthy, brown tones (the dark brown tables are gorgeous!!) The space is quite bright but not in the middle where they have no windows so expect yellowish lighting there (also the case on rainy days for the whole space).
For the food and coffee (even hot chocolate) you can expect beautiful latte art and a delicious/photogenic looking dish which will fill every Instagramer´s heart with warmth. Also interior shots can turn out really amazing, so keep this option in mind.

 Café Kranzler (The Barn)
located at  Kurfürstendamm 18, 10719 Berlin

location
Café Kranzler was once an iconic, old Café in Berlin and is now part of The Barn located perfectly at Berlin´s main shopping street the Kurfürstendamm. The interior of the quite big space is not really special but beautiful completed with two big marble tables. Furthermore, you will have the best view over the Kurfürstendamm from their terrace which is big enough for you to have a seat, enjoy the view and/or have a cool drink relaxing in the sun. You will get a seat within a few minutes even on the weekend.

Drinks/Food
With a small selection of drinks and food Café Kranzler isn´t the best but enough for a quick stop from exploring Berlin or a long shopping day. They offer cupcakes, cake, sandwiches and the usual hot beverages.

Service
You have to order at the counter (which I prefer) talking to one of the friendly Baristas who really knows what he/she does. They then call you by your name and you get your order within a few minutes. They also speak english.

Price
Similar if not the same to the other The Barn´s. You have to consider the amazing location.

Instagramability
The view is amazing for photos. Due to the round shaped terrace you also have an amazing overview. The food looks great and the latte art is perfect, so a go for wonderful pictures. Only negative point, again, the yellowish lighting which is definitely fixable with a few edits.

Café Oliv
located at Münzstraße 8, 10178 Berlin

location
A café near the Hackesche Markt perfect for a quick rest from exploring and shopping. The interior is simple, in neutral tones and the space is overall bright. Sit outside (not many seats) on sunny days or inside - it usually is not really crowded so do not worry.

Drinks/Food
I haven´t had any of the dishes or snacks they offer so far but they look delicous wether for breakfast or lunch. They also offer some snacks and hot and cold beverages. We sat there for some time resting from a hot summer day.

 Service
Friendly, professional and fast. You can ask them for advice which dish/drink to order and have a little chat if it´s not crowded. They also speak english.

Price
The price is quite high but the quality of the food seems amazing!

Instagramability
Coffee art, perfectly arranged food, good lighting due to the windows and beautiful tables scream for pictures. Also.. the floor looks amazing, doesn´t it?

The Barn
located at Schönhauser Allee 8, 10119 Berlin

location
Luckily the space (including many seats outdoor) is quite big and looks similar to The Barn at Auguststraße. To mention are the amazing tables right by the big windows.

Drinks/food
Similar to the other The Barns this one has a variety of sweet and salty snacks and a great variety of beverages. It all looks nice and tastes delicious.

Service
The Baristas speak German and English, are friendly and professional. It doesn´t take much time until they call you by name to get your order.

Price
Like the other The Barns, pricy but worth it.

Instagramability
The interior is beautiful and if you get a seat by the window a beautiful picture is guaranteed. Pretty looking latte art, food and tables complete your arrangement.
But as always, be aware of yellowish lighting - on the one hand it´s cozy but not really great for pictures.

For me, as lover of Cafés, the amazing vibes and time to relax, these are on top of my list. For some more pictures and suggestions of which Cafés to visit keep an eye on my Blog, maybe subscribe and be up to date on my Instagram where I will announce when  Part  II  goes online.

Thanks for reading.
See you next time,
Christopher
